Calculating Costs

There are a few things you will need to consider when you are estimating the cost of a new spray foam insulation installation. You may want to do some preliminary research online or in physical building materials stores. Conversely, keep on reading!

Open vs. Closed Cell

Open cell is typically cheaper to install than closed cell, but it also does not provide nearly as good of an R-value. Depending on the region in which you live, open cell may not be recommended at all, as it will be extremely ineffective. The first thing you will need to know when factoring in the cost of your new spray foam insulation is to find out whether or not you will be using open cell foam or closed cell.

Size of the Area to Be Insulated

The next, and perhaps most important factor in estimating spray foam insulation cost is the size of the area to be insulated. There are several different ways that you can go about arriving at this estimate, but if you plan to land anywhere close to the actual cost, you will need to take some physical measurements.

A good rule of thumb when calculating cost: (square footage of the area to be insulated)x(R-value) = cost of installation. This can get you a rough estimate.

However, if you like the get more an even more accurate estimate, consider the average cost is about $0.44 to $1.50 per board foot. One square foot which is covered by 1 inch of insulation is referred to as a board foot. This means that 1000 board feet of spray foam could cost between $444 and $1500.


Now that we’ve discovered the cost per board foot, which is the cost of 1 square foot by 1 inch thick, we will want to take into consideration that you may want to install your new spray foam more than one inch deep.

A thicker application is necessary for some areas to provide an adequate R-value. If you live in the north, for example, a good number of builders recommend installing spray foam insulation between 2-3 inches deep.

If you are installing spray foam at a thickness of 2 inches, you will need to double the cost estimate from the example above. If you plan on installing spray foam at a thickness of 3 inches, triple the cost estimate from above.

Experience of the Contractor

The contractor you choose to install your spray foam insulation will have a big impact on the price of installation. If you are interested in saving some money, you might be thinking about hiring a less experienced contractor or even attempting to do it yourself. However, keep in mind that if your project is done poorly, you may be forced to spend even more time and money.

Sometimes shelling out the additional cash for a good quality contractor is well worth the extra dough. Spray foam insulation is a job that requires skill and experience. A contractor unqualified to do the work may fail to seal off all areas or spray foam at inconsistent thicknesses, leaving your home more vulnerable to energy loss.
